Im Wettbewerb um den besten Hoteltipp im Mai haben sich zwei von euch ein hartes Kopf-an-Kopf-Rennen geliefert. Bis zuletzt blieb es spannend: wer würde die meisten positiven Bewertungen bekommen? Piiit fand 116 User, die für seinen ausführlichen Bericht über das Märchenhotel auf Kuba stimmten. Aber BellaOnTour ließ sich die Führung nicht nehmen. Unglaubliche 133 Freunde und andere Community-Mitglieder fanden ihren Text über die günstige Alternative zum Hotel, ein Hostel in Stuttgart, hilfreich!

Die amerikanische online-Zeitung East Bay Express hat einen Artikel veröffentlicht, der seit nun einer Woche auf Platz eins ihrer “most popular stories” steht. In Yelp and the Business of Extortion 2.0 geht es um fragwürdige Methoden des US-weiten Stadtführers www.yelp.com. Restaurant-Besitzer berichten von Anrufen durch Yelp-Mitarbeiter, die an Schutzgelderpressung erinnern: Ihr Restaurant habe in letzter Zeit einige negative Userbewertungen erhalten, so die Anrufer, doch gegen einen Preis von $299 im Monat würde Yelp diese stets nach unten raten. Ein Eingriff in die Usermeinungen, der an sich ein unzulässiges Angebot darstellt, aber es geht noch weiter: In dem Artikel wird der Verdacht geäußert, dass Yelp negative Bewertungen so lange nach oben stellt, bis der Betroffene eine Anzeige schaltet. Yelp Mitarbeiter sollen gar selbst Communitybeiträge verfassen – postive für die Anzeigenkunden, negative für die, die es werden sollen…
“Yelp ist just real people, writing real reviews, and that’s the real deal”, so die Selbstbeschreibung auf der Homepage. Doch wenn Yelp mit derartigen Methoden Geschäfte macht, ist das eher eine reale Kathastrophe, rufschädigend für die ganze Branche. Und wohin die Missachtung ethischer Standards im Geschäftsleben führt, wird uns dieser Tage ja überdeutlich vor Augen gehalten…

Romance Blossoms in Zermatt!
Winter has finally released its grip and with the new found warmth of spring, romance blossoms! May is the one of the most popular months of the year to get married. People tend to favour planning a wedding at this time of year when the weather is more reliable and the days are longer and lighter. I think every bride dreams of her wedding day to be warm and sunny and for it not to be pouring with rain! Having said this on Cosmotourist you will find tips about people who have got married all over the world in every season.
So to get you in the romantic mood take a look at Juliadrake28’s picture for inspiration here. Julia’s pictures of her wedding in Zermatt in Switzerland are truly breathtaking. To fulfill her romantic wedding ideal she travelled all the way from the USA to Europe. A ceremony out in the open air with only the backdrop of nature and close friends and family- a dream come true! As if this weren’t enough her wedding celebrations were then held in Restaurant Blatten who’s owners met and fell in love climbing the Matterhorn. You can read the full account of the romantic way in which she tied the knot here.
Jubond got married in Caxambu in Brazil in the quaint church of Santa Isabel da Hungria. Situated at the top of 126 stairs with a splendid view across the city this seems a wonderfully romantic spot to tie the knot. Cuba is yet another exotic location to get married, Annatravel did this in the famous Sandals Royal Hicacos Resort in a gazebo and she was lucky enough to have a wedding coordinator to spare her all the organisation stress! If you want to tie the knot in a slightly different manner then how does this sound? Kristin5683 went to a friend’s wedding at the Artisan Hotel & Spa in Las Vegas where the décor included leopard print carpets and dark red walls!

Es ist bekannt: im Frühling tauen die Gefühle auf, die Liebe erblüht. Harte Zeiten sind das für die Standesbeamten. Im Akkord schaffen sie unvergessliche Momente für Verliebte, die ihr Hochzeitsfest mit der Kirschbaumblüte synchronisieren möchten. Und sollte jemand zwar einen Partner fürs Leben, aber keinen Baum finden, kann er selbst einen pflanzen: im Berliner Hochzeitspark. Jetzt ist die beste Zeit, wie Morena hier erläutert.
Doch auf Cosmotourist ist es ganzjährig romantisch und es wird weltweit geheiratet. Hat der Standesbeamte oder der Pfarrer keinen Termin frei, geht es eben nach Las Vegas, wo man ganz unkompliziert heiraten kann. Wie das geht, weiß MissT. Die Amerikanerin Juliadrake wiederum ist für ihr Ja-Wort nach Europa gekommen, sie fand sie die Erfüllung ihres Hochzeitstraumes in Zermatt. Warum, ist leicht nachvollziehbar, wenn man sich die wunderbar romantischen Fotos dieser open air Zeremonie ansieht.
Inka wiederum war wichtig, im katholischen Regensburg eine evangelische Kirche zu finden. Wie schön das gelungen ist, sieht man hier. Außerdem musste eine freistehende Badewanne her, die aber wahrscheinlich erst nachts zum Einsatz kam, und zwar im Hotel Orphee.
Auf Hawaii machen es sich viele Brautpaare leichter. Sie verzichten auf Tischkarten und Etikette und mischen sich ganz locker unter das grillende und Frisbee spielende Volk im Stadtpark, wie surftravel hier erzählt.
Egal in welchem Ambiente – Userin Piaffe ließe sich nicht zum Heiraten überreden, auch nicht auf einem astreinen Golfplatz. Obwohl sie gesteht, dass der Club Kaden ihrem “Wasserproblem” gut tun würde – ihr Motto ist: Golfen ja, heiraten nein!

Amazing but true, the American online newspaper East Bay Express has recently published an article about some rather shady goings on concerning the US wide online city guide www.yelp.com . The article concerns itself with the way in which user ratings can be manipulated. For example restaurants that are being portrayed in a bad light can pay yelp.com to remove negative ratings about their establishment. This makes a whole farce of the ethics published on the site, “real people writing real reviews.” Many of those yelp clients interviewed by the newspaper spoke of phone calls they had received from yelp that negatively reminded them of a “Mafia” protection racket.
But that’s not all, yelp apparently may also takes measures to keep showing the negative ratings of an establishment until it is finally forced to advertise and hence spend more money on yelp. Those that refuse may well find that their positive reviews then suddenly disappear.
It tends to be yelp employees and not members of the yelp community that add reviews to the site. And more often than not, the content of the reviews has more to do with the politics of the site than with the truth.
Such findings are certainly very serious and threaten the entire branch.

The Bavarian travel community (www.cosmotourist.com) has obtained registration from the responsible US authorities for the trademark Cosmotourist. For over a year proceedings have been going on with the media giant Hearst Inc. who had challenged Cosmotourist’s trademark registration for the US market. Obtaining trademark registration in the US is a significant milestone for Cosmotourist.
Frederik Kraus, managing director of the as yet privately financed start up quoted the following, “This is a great start for the New Year. We are very happy to have been able to come to this agreement with Hearst. During the dispute we felt a bit like being David in the story of David and Goliath as we refused to be intimidated by our powerful opponent. It was also quite right that we commissioned attorney Kristin Achterhof, of Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP one of the most renown law firms to aid us in the proceedings. In any case we can now concentrate all our energy on the success of our innovative travel guide concept. Our members (all of whom are passionate travellers) have published over 50,000 travel tips and well over 150,000 photos with us in less than 2 years. This is the very proof that our concept has terrific scope!”

Im Winter fliehen viele in den Süden und wollen von Schnee nichts wissen. Umso erstaunter sind sie dann, wenn die Ortsansässigen ihre Skier Schultern und im schönsten Sonnenschein zu unbekannten Schneeressourcen aufbrechen. Skifahren auf Cosmotourist ist eine Geschichte mit vielen überraschenden Kapiteln. Oder hättet ihr gedacht, dass man im flachen Schottland Skifahren kann, im winzigen Andorra oder im heißen Portugal? Oder, wie ich es in Indien gesehen habe: Auf dem 4.000 Meter hohen Rothang-Pass im Himalaya. Aber nicht etwa über spektakuläre Pisten im immerwährenden Schnee. Die Inder tun hier nur so als ob. Sie leihen sich skurille 80er Jahre Ganzkörper-Skianzüge und posieren neben Yaks auf recht trostlosem Schnee. Hier das Beweisfoto. Und auch in den Anden ist das Skifahren irgendwie anders. Miri85 hat es in einem unterhaltsamen Reisetagebuch geschildert.
Doch es muss ja nicht immer das ganz globalisierte Skifahren sein. Natürlich gibt es auch etwas näher vor der Haustür einiges zu entdecken. Ich wäre z.B. nie darauf gekommen, auf der wunderbaren aber flachen Seiser Alm Ski zu fahren, im Fichtelgebirge oder in Sachsen. Muss aber schön sein. Mehr zum Thema Wintervergnügen findet ihr hier. In the Advent season many people find themselves having to attend yet another Christmas party and this is often enough the very last thing they want to do! However when it comes to the Cosmotourist Christmas party then it’s a very different story.
We have settled into the habit of having our party long after Christmas is over. This means that we have all survived the festive season and are generally well rested and ready for another celebration! This is at least the plan! Christoph one of the company founders and Inka his wife were the hosts this year and right up until our arrival they were still sorting out the kitchen in their new home. They were of course completely relaxed and not stressed at all-riggght! Respect that they managed to pull it off!
As the Sociologist Wilhelm Reich put it, “Love, work and knowledge are the roots of life” and “one ought to possess all of these things.” This was a reminder that we definitely took to heart that night.
The subject of work was very quickly dealt with at the party. 2008 was a very successful year and positively contributed to the development of our community. We agreed that there is still a heck of a lot to do, but with our ample motivation there is nothing to stop us! We discussed love in an occupational sense as to how it affects one’s travels. Should we have gone abroad more often in-spite of love interests and sweethearts? Did we make good enough use of our student days to travel the world? How would our lives had differed had we moved to Australia, Brazil or Scotland? And then last but not least, we touched upon the subject of knowledge. All of us contributed what we knew to discussions about correlations in world economy, questions about medical ethics, student fraternities, ways to self- awareness, esoterism in general and then finally we addressed the important subject as to who is responsible for the housework in a relationship. Who irons, who washes up? And with that we completed the circle; the roots of life somehow always come back to the subject of love. So what do you say, our Christmas party was in-fact a good effort wasn’t it?!

Das Gesicht ist blass, die Augen rollen zur Decke, der Mund verzieht sich zu einem gequälten Lächeln: “Heute muss ich noch zu einer Weihnachtsfeier”. In der “staaden Zeit”, wie der Bayer den Vorweihnachtstrubel nennt, ist das die übliche Art diesen Satz zu sagen. Nicht so bei Cosmotourist. Wir haben die schöne Tradition entwickelt, Weihnachten zu feiern, wenn Weihnachten längst überstanden ist. Ungestresst und erholt. So zumindest der Plan. Christoph, einer der Mitbegründer von Cosmotourist und Inka, seine Frau und Gastgeberin des diesjährigen Festes, werkelten quasi bis kurz vor unserem Eintreffen an der neuen Küche in ihrem neuen Heim. Gaaanz ungestresst, versteht sich. Großer Einsatz, den wir mit einer großen, möchte sagen: großartigen Tischkonversation dankten.
“Liebe, Arbeit und Wissen sind die Quellen unseres Lebens” schrieb einst der Soziologe Wilhelm Reich, und: “sie sollten es auch beherrschen”. Eine Mahnung, die wir uns zu Herzen nahmen. Das Thema Arbeit war im positiven Sinn schnell abgehakt: Ein erfolgreiches Jahr 2008 brachte einen schönen Fortschritt für die Community, es bleibt viel Arbeit, aber was macht das schon, wenn die Motivation stimmt! Die Liebe betrachteten wir berufsbedingt vor dem Hintergrund des Reisens. Hätte man trotz Beziehung öfter mal ins Ausland gehen sollen? Haben wir unsere Studienzeit dafür genug genutzt? Wie sähe ein anderer Lebensentwurf aus in Australien, Brasilien oder Schottland? Schließlich das Thema Wissen. Es wurde aufgearbeitet, indem jeder in die Runde warf, was er eben so wußte über die großen Zusammenhänge der Weltwirtschaft, zu Fragen der medizinischen Ethik, über Studentenverbindungen, Wege der Selbsterkenntnis, Esoterik im Allgemeinen und dann: über die partnerschaftliche Aufteilung des Haushaltes. Wer bügelt, wer spült ab? Und so schlossen wir den großen Bogen der Quellen unseres Lebens, zurück zur Liebe, irgendwie. Na, wenn das kein Einsatz war!
